A deep scattering layer under the North Pole pack ice

چکیده

The 3.3 million km2 marine ecosystem around the North Pole, defined as Central Arctic Ocean (CAO), is a blind spot on map of world’s fish stocks. CAO essentially comprises permanently ice-covered deep basins and ridges outside continental shelves, only accessible by ice-breakers. Traditional trawling for assessing stocks impossible under thick pack ice, coherent hydroacoustic surveys are unachievable due to ice-breaking noise. Consequently, nothing known about existence any pelagic in CAO, although juveniles Boreogadus saida richly occur at surface associated with sea ice ice-associated Arctogadus glacialis has been reported well. We here present first indication possible mesopelagic stock CAO. had opportunity analyse geophysical data set 13 time windows usable acoustic over transect from 84.4 °N Nansen Basin, across Pole (90.0 °N), 82.4 Canada Basin. discovered scattering layer (DSL), suggesting presence zooplankton fish, 300–600 m depth Atlantic water Maximum abundance biomass was very low; values ca. 2,000 individuals km−2 50 kg were calculated DSL North-Pole area according model assuming that all backscatter represents 15-cm long B. and/or A. glacialis. true even lower than this, but cannot be quantified this dataset originating pneumatophores physonect siphonophores area. Further studies should include sampling identification backscattering organisms. From our study we can conclude if central contains their currently too low sustainable fishery.

Optical properties of deep ice at the South Pole: scattering.

Recently, absorption and scattering at depths 800-1000 m in South Pole ice have been studied with transit-time distributions of pulses from a variable-frequency laser sent between emitters and receivers embedded in the ice. At 800-1000 m, scattering is independent of wavelength and the scattering centers are air bubbles of size ? wavelength. At 1500-2000 m it is predicted that all bubbles will ...

Under-ice Boundary Layer

Sea ice is in almost constant motion in response to wind, ocean currents, and forces transmitted within the ice cover itself, thus there is nearly always a zone of sheared Sow between the ice and underlying, undisturbed ocean where turbulence transports momentum, heat, salt, and other contaminants vertically. The zone in which these turbulent Suxes occur, which can span from a few to hundreds o...

Optical properties of deep ice at the South Pole: absorption.

We discuss recent measurements of the wavelength-dependent absorption coefficients in deep South Pole ice. The method uses transit-time distributions of pulses from a variable-frequency laser sent between emitters and receivers embedded in the ice. At depths of 800-1000 m scattering is dominated by residual air bubbles, whereas absorption occurs both in ice itself and in insoluble impurities. T...

Automated Ice-Tethered Profilers for Seawater Observations under Pack Ice in All Seasons

An automated, easily deployed Ice-Tethered Profiler (ITP) instrument system, developed for deployment on perennial sea ice in the polar oceans to measure changes in upper ocean water properties in all seasons, is described, and representative data from prototype instruments are presented. The ITP instrument consists of three components: a surface subsystem that sits atop an ice floe; a weighted...

Identifying “Skylites” for AUV Operations under Pack Ice: Insights from Ice-draft Profiling by Moored Sonar

The past decade has seen a remarkable evolution of sea-floor-based ice-draft profiling capabilities. Efforts have progressed from an original Beaufort Sea deployment of a single upward-looking acoustic echo sounder to the almost routine present-day positionings of special-purpose profiler units which operate in conjunction with adjacent current profiling and ice drift measurement instruments. T...
